Low economic status exposes women to gender-based violence

SELEBI-PHIKWE: A recent workshop organised by Emang Basadi in Selebi-Phikwe has attributed the low socio-economic status of women in the copper mining town to gender-based violence.

The participants who were drawn from support groups, non-governmental organisations as well as traditional and religious leaders from the town and neighbouring villages, heard that a 2009-2010 research by Phikwe Theatre Support Group on young women and HIV/AIDS showed that women overly depend on men for economic upkeep.

"The fact that men are providers economically makes them sole decision-makers, especially on issues of sexuality," highlighted the support group official.
