Local police ranked Africas finest

The inaugural edition of a global ranking of internal security of countries has ranked Botswana Police Service (BPS) the best at providing security for its citizens, noting in particular that they have lower tendencies of accepting bribes compared to other countries.

The results are contained in the World Internal Security and Police Index (WISPI), a study conducted by the International Police Science Association (IPSA), a Florida, USA-based research institute. The study, known as the WISPI, analyses countries’ internal securities across indicators. These include the general public’s perception of the police and security as well as measurement of the level of safety provided and forces needed to provide that level of security. WISPI also looked at the countries’ capacities, processes, legitimacy and outcomes.

The study also involved assessing the ability of other security apparatuses within a country such as the armed forces, private security and prison capacity looking at the number of personnel per 100,000 people.
