Lax Wi-Fi protocols, thousands of unemployed IT graduates and unsecured but valuable data could explode into a full-on cyber crime disaster for local businesses, exposing their operations and systems to hackers, data corruption and theft, experts have warned.

Local cyber security experts, IT academics, researchers and even a Federal Bureau of Investigations special agent were among technocrats speaking at the Third African Cyber Crime conference held yesterday.

Most of the experts cautioned that cyber security was being taken far too casually in a country where most of the business community is data and Internet reliant.

The ongoing salary negotiations between trade unions and the Directorate of Public Service Management (DPSM) have escalated to the Industrial Court, with the five-plus-one unions filing an urgent application in which they accuse the government of unfair labour practices.
