Local bricklayers far off the mark

While they are expected to lay 1,000 bricks a day, local bricklayers are trained in brigades to lay just 100, says a WikiLeaks cable discussing Youth Unemployment in Botswana by former US ambassador, Steven Nolan.

The cable quotes a general contractor in Maun who observed that the brigades teach students to lay 100 bricks a day, when employers expect them to lay 1,000.

The secret document says Botswana's training institutes seem to produce low-productivity workers, resulting in high rate of unemployment and commercial sex work.
