Lionjanga's personal circumstances outweigh offence - magistrate

The convicted former Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Board, executive chairman, Armando Lionjanga, was sentenced to three years imprisonment wholly suspended for two years.

The Village Chief Magistrate, Lot Moroka, before handing down the sentence said it would be wrong to give too much consideration to the seriousness and the nature of the offence over the personal circumstances of the accused.

Moroka observed that Lionjanga had a good reputation prior to his conviction. Lionjanga is an elderly man with an illustrious career. He has no previous convictions and also suffers from a chronic illness. These weighty circumstances cannot be ignored when giving sentence," Moroka said.
