Liberia seeks help of Botswana vets

The Liberian government has appealed to Botswana to avail veterinary officers who can assist the country revive its civil war-crippled agricultural sector.

The country is left with only four veterinarians and a reduced number of domestic and wild animals following its decades of civil war. The Liberian Agriculture Minister, Dr Florence Chenoweth told the Botswana Assistant Minister of Agriculture, Oreeditse Molebatsi that as her country is beginning to recover from the ravages of the civil war, efforts to import and restock livestock are being mobilised.

Chenoweth said Liberian veterinarians were either killed during the civil war or went into exile. She said very few people now own domestic animals as a result of the war, tsetse fly outbreak and other livestock diseases.
