Levy amendment was much ado about nothing - KBL

Inspite of the amendment to the alcohol levy on Tuesday this week, KBL says the effort was much ado about nothing because the system remains lopsided in favour of importers of alcoholic beverages.

It has since surfaced that the amendment tabled before Parliament on Tuesday was only a formality as the taxman has been charging importers of alcohol a levy on transport and insurance costs anyway.

The Director of Trade and Consumer Affairs, John Matsheng, confirmed yesterday that the original regulations gazetted on October 31 did not specify how the Botswana Unified Revenue Services (BURS) should levy imported goods, which has created a problem regarding whether the levy should be charged at factory price or at landed costs.
