Letloreng to be granted settlement status

SELEBI PHIKWE: Letloreng in the Mahalapye Sub-district will on Tuesday assume the status of a legally recognised settlement, ending years of uncertainty during which people there were often threatened with relocation.

The settlement was declared illegal by the Sefhare Land Board in 2002. In 2004, the residents were told to relocate in three months or face legal action and possible forced relocation. Confirming the granting of legal status to the settlement, the Assistant Minister of Local Government Ambrose Masalila says Letloreng was not recognised as a formal settlement because its population was too small.

There has to be sufficient land for ploughing and cattle rearing for a place to acquire legal status as a settlement, the Minister explains. Masalila says some settlements had begun as cattleposts and that there were instances where councils provided basic services to residents of places not gazetted as legal settlements.
