Moses Lekaukau, who was unceremoniously sacked as chief of Government Implementation and Coordination Office (GICO), is reportedly under investigation for corruption.

Highly placed sources in government say that the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) is probing the former Botswana Telecommunications Authority (BTA) boss and retired Permanent Secretary, who was awarded the President's Order of Honour in 1996. The award is bestowed on those who have offered efficient and devoted service to the country. Efforts to speak to Lekaukau on the corruption allegations were fruitless at the time of going to press while DCEC spokesman, Lentswe Motshoganetsi refused to confirm or deny the claims. "I cannot confirm or deny that we are investigating Lekaukau," Motshoganetsi said.

Meanwhile, acting permanent secretary to the President, Bruce Palai has said Lekaukau, who was engaged by government on contract was sacked in accordance with the law and his letter of appointment. Lekaukau was dramatically removed from office with reports that security intelligence operatives were roped in to evict him. It is understood he was punished for his support for suspended Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) secretary general, Gomolemo Motswaledi in his tiff with President Ian Khama. Some people see Khama's hand at play, but Palai has denied the claims.
