FRANCISTOWN: Prominent Francistown lawyer, Morgan Moseki, says that based on the challenges besetting the media sector in Botswana, there is need for media practitioners to maintain the highest standards of reporting.

Moseki said this during a panel discussion under the theme: "Safety of journalists, impunity and safety offline." The panel discussion which was held on May 2 marked a prelude to the World Press Freedom Day activities."It's critical for the media and media practitioners to uphold the highest standards of ethical reporting, as well as truthfulness, balance, accuracy and fairness," he pointed out. He warned that once standards are lowered, "the media exposes itself to attacks which justify its gagging."

Moseki observed that generally, the environment under which journalists ply their trade in Botswana is better compared to countries like Afghanistan, Mexico, Pakistan, China, Sudan, North Korea and others where he said it was "unsafe" to practice the trade. He stated that in Botswana no journalist has been killed in the line of duty whilst in other countries, it was a common occurrence. He holds a strong view that education was another tool that could arm media workers to perform their duties diligently and accurately.
