Law to domesticate youth council on the cards

Minister for Youth, Sport and Culture, General Moeng Pheto is set to present a draft of the Botswana National Youth Council (BNYC) bill to the 4th session of the 9th Parliament next week.

The proposed bill was published last week Friday in the Government Gazette. Pheto is advocating for the setting up of youth council by parliamentary statute. The BNYC, currently chaired by Elius Rantleru was established through a presidential directive in 1974. The new law will dissolve the current Botswana National Youth Council.

According to the proposed bill, the BNYC shall be responsible for the promotion and coordination of government policies on the youth in the non-government sector. Among others, the highlighted provisions address the establishment of the council, the executive committee, a general assembly for the council, administration of the council and financial provisions. Contrary to the current practice, the minister wants the power to appoint the executive committee members including the chairperson. As proposed in the bill, representatives from the Department of Culture and Youth, Sports and Recreation, Ministry of Local Government and Education will make up the executive council.
