Law society welcomes Maruping appointment

"The Law Society of Botswana congratulates Judge Maruping on his appointment," said LSB Deputy Executive Secretary Wema Isa-Molwane. She said Justice Maruping meets the academic qualifications for being a judge. The LSB's welcome of Maruping is in sharp contrast to the criticism from unions that met his appointment.
The Botswana Public Service Union (BOFEPUSU) has said that it was against Maruping's appointment because the President has no power in terms of the Trade Dispute Act (TDA) to appoint any judge as judge president. The union argued through its secretary-general Andrew Motsamai that in terms of section 16 (2) the President may only designate one of the judges as the judge president.
