Lands ministry under pressure to deliver - Molefhi

The introduction of another 'D' for Delivery by President Ian Khma means the Ministry of Lands and Housing is under pressure to deliver, says Minister Nonofho Molefhi.

He was addressing participants at a recent workshop on the theme: "Measuring progress towards service delivery targets: engage with civil society and Government" held at the University of Botswana (UB). The workshop was meant to bring together government and civil society groups, present preliminary research findings and exchange ideas.

Molefhi told the workshop that from the time he received a call from the Office of the President (OP) expressing the President's interest in having him as the Minister of Lands and Housing (a reappointment), he has never rested, literally. But luckily, his past experiences in various Government positions had eased the bumpy road to service delivery for him.He told to seminar participants that as ministers they have to sign progress reports. Every three months they have performance assessments and every six months there is a review session where every minister is expected to give a detailed report."The new system requires us to have hands-on information about what happens in our ministries - we do not have to rely on officials (like permanent secretaries). As the Lands and Housing minister I have to know how many houses are done and all related information. That is why as Cabinet we need to have at least one consultative Kgotla meeting in a week. We go beyond the policy printed on the paper. Good intentions, plans, systems and ethics are not enough - results should be produced - leading to social and economic transformation," he told the participants.
