Kweneng schools face water disconnection

MOGODITSHANE: Water supplies to primary schools in Mogoditshane/Thamaga area in Kweneng District may be disconnected because of high bills, a civic leader has said.

The Chairperson of Mogoditshane/Thamaga Sub-District council, Driver Motlokwa said yesterday that since October last year certain schools have run water bills of between P83,000 and P684,000.  Moamogwe Primary School leads with P684,000 followed by Lesirane with about P317,000, Solomon Dihutso (P187,030), Nkoyaphiri (P109,000) and Mogoditshane (P83,000). The bills are expected to shoot up because the Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) has not billed 12 schools in the sub-district. Motlokwa said that the sub-council is formulating a water conservation strategy to curb the high bills.

He was speaking at the first ordinary session of the Sub-District Council meeting in Mogoditshane. He expressed concern about the decline of the Standard Seven results in the area, from 65.4 percent in 2010-2011 to 60.1 percent in 2011-2012 for the ABC total quality pass. He said this is mainly attributed to lack of parental involvement, teacher commitment and insufficient resources due to the effect of the economic recession that has affected the country.
He urged councillors to work together with parents and encourage them to be involved in their children's academic work. He said learners depend on a number of factors including parental participation in their education to excel in their studies.
