President Ian Khama has said ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) chairman, Daniel 'DK' Kwelagobe is a self-seeking and power-hungry politician.

Speaking in Mahalapye over the weekend, Khama said a deal was made in the BDP in 2007 for Kwelagobe to assume the party chairmanship without challenge from Vice President, Mompati Merafhe. However, Kwelagobe has refused to return the favour and give the baton to Merafhe this time around.

"In 2007, Kwelagobe came to me and said 'when you become president, I want to be chairman as the position will be vacant. I know Merafhe wants to be chairman too and I know he will win'. I went to Merafhe and told him. He said that he would back down in the interest of party unity. That is how Kwelagobe became chairman. Last time I realised that some people were still clinging to factions and I knew the two (Kwelagobe and Merafhe) wanted to stand for the chairmanship. I expected Kwelagobe to give Merafhe an opportunity this time. But Kwelagobe would not budge," said Khama.
