Kokorwe calls for greater independence of Parliament

The Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly and Member of Parliament for Kweneng South Gladys Kokorwe has called for the removal of Parliament from the Office of the President in order to enable it to assert its independence.

She was contributing to the State of the Nation address on Wednesday. Kokorwe said Parliament should not receive directives from Cabinet; rather, Cabinet should approach Parliament with a view to consult.

Parliament should employ its own staff and have its own management system. "In countries like Uganda, there is a (law) which they use to manage the finances of their parliament without requesting permission from the Finance Ministry," she said.
