Khumaga girl drowns in Boteti River

A 15-year-old girl drowned on Monday in Boteti River at Khumaga Village. The village is just a stone's throw away from the popular Makgadikgadi Pans.

The river acts as a border of sorts between the village and the tourist attraction area. Khumaga/Moreomaoto councillor, Thomas Kgethenyane, said the girl had gone to the river to swim in the morning with three of her friends when tragedy occurred. She went under and did not resurface again and her friends tried in futile to rescue her.

The village chief, Kereeditse Orapeleng said that he was attending a Kgotla meeting when government officers came to report that the girl had drowned. Wildlife officers used a motorboat to scour the river , but failed to locate her. Orapeleng said that while they were waiting for the arrival of soldiers from Maun, four young men volunteered to dive in the river and retrieved the body of the girl. "She was already dead when they fished her out," he said.
