Khama's grand strategy pays dividends

Former Botswana Defence Force (BDF) army commander, President Ian Khama is a smart strategist through and through.

Even his critics will agree that the man knows how to play his cards. Brought in at a time when the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) factionalism was at its zenith, the army general found himself in a different battleground. He had to deal with politicians, who though belonging to the same political organisation, were bitterly opposed to each other and pulling at opposite ends, something that threatened to put the party asunder. The factions snowballed into the now infamous Kanye congress from which the party emerged bruised.

On the other hand, Khama the state president when he came had a vision in which through it he saw this country developing into a powerful global player. However his emphasis was in developing the country from within, where he highlighted much the need for high social mores.
