Khama's Consensus Bears Fruit

FRANCISTOWN: The ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) will not hold primaries in the four opposition held constituencies in Gaborone after the intervention of Vice President Ian Khama. The BDP chairman is said to have reduced the race for the party's ticket in Gaborone Central, Gaborone South, Gaborone West North and Gaborone West South to no contests through consensus.

The biggest beneficiary of the move is nominated MP and former BDP executive secretary Botsalo Ntuane who has been in a dilemma over which constituency to got for. Ntuane has landed the Botswana National Front (BNF) bastion of Gaborone West South currently represented by Robert Molefhabangwe. After he was told to forget his home constituency of Nata-Gweta and focus on Gaborone by Khama, the nominated MP faced the prospect of missing the BDP ticket. This is because the BDP already had prominent figures staking their claim in Gaborone and the situation was not made easier for Ntuane by the fact that some of the interested parties were either his friends or political allies. But all ended well last Friday when he told Monitor that he is a beneficiary of the consensus spearheaded by Khama.

"My candidature in Gaborone West South is the result of my interaction with Khama and other party members like Odirile Motlhale. You would recall that initially, Motlhale was to contest here as he did in the last general election," explained Ntuane. He said Khama's intervention in the Gaborone constituencies has brought hope in the faction-ridden BDP that "peace that has been elusive over the years will be finally attained". He hopes this will make the BDP a real force to reckon with. He added that the consensus is what the party chairman has always wished for and it is happening slowly.
