Khama would not allow Iran to open embassy

President Ian Khama would not allow Iran to open an embassy here and berated the Botswana Football Association (BFA) for inviting the Iranian national team to a game in Botswana, which was played in Gaborone 2009, describing the Arab country as undemocratic, Mmegi is informed.

The match was a warm-up for the 2009 African Cup of Nations and also aimed at attracting new tourists, especially for the 2010 World Cup.  A Wikileaks cable detailing a report by then US ambassador Stephen Nolan says Khama reacted angrily upon learning of the planned Iran-Botswana match, and summoned BFA representatives to a meeting at his office in June 2009.

The cable says President Khama reportedly asked the BFA why they had organised a football match with a country like Iran.
