Khama weak in dialogue - Dumelang

The MP for Gaborone Central, Dumelang Saleshando, has said that President Ian Khama's major weakness is his inability to engage in dialogue with those who differ with him.

"We know from the leaked American diplomatic cables that his cabinet colleagues are also concerned by the president's inability to engage in vigorous debates and prefer to issue directives that must never be questioned.  As Minister Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi opined to Americans, no one in cabinet is willing to take him on," Saleshando said this week in parliament in response to the President's state of the nation address.

Saleshando, who is also the president of the Botswana Congress Party (BCP), said differences of opinion must never be a basis for refusing to dialogue.  He told parliament that great leaders always engage their opponents and refusal to do so may be a sign that one is not confident enough to defend his position.  He recalled that former presidents of this country always engaged the opposition.
