Khama undermines Parliament - BCP

The Botswana Congress Party (BCP) has released its second Democracy Alert report in which it calls for a probe into the conduct of the Chief Justice and comments cogently on what it characterises as the erosion of democracy, civil liberties and the rule of law to the international community.

In it, the ruling Botswana Democratic Party government comes under attack for being secretive and unaccountable. Presenting the report at a press conference addressed by the party leadership yesterday, BCP president Gilson Saleshando said there was an emerging trend by President Ian Khama to undermine Parliament and the cabinet by running the country through presidential directives.

Khama was personalising the presidency by making unilateral decisions on matters of national interest he claimed.Saleshando and BCP deputy president Kesitegile Gobotswang gave the example of the Arable Land Development Programme 3, saying it was terminated by a presidential directive when it was a scheme approved by Parliament. The BCP also said Khama was undermining the 2008/9 budget by introducing extraneous projects.
