Khama staggers Zuma

It is not everyday that a state President is caught in a moment of song. On Friday, in Gaborone, at the 4th Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the Member States of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), heads of states from Namibia, Lesotho, and Swaziland joined in the chorus as Botswana President Ian Khama led a familiar tune, a happy birthday song to South African President Jacob Zuma who turned 71 years on Friday.

It was a moment of spontaneity as only President Khama seemed to know what he had in mind. He was drawing to the end of his closing remarks, when he paused and out of the blues,  told  of how he likes singing."I like to sing," but there is this song that I know I can sing very well, Khama said. He then invited every body to sing with him. But, before Khama led the audience in song, he advised everyone that they have a choice during the singing of the song, either to say "President or Jacob".

At that point some people who had no idea of the President's plan looked at one another and laughed. Then Khama opened his musical mouth as he belted out a Happy Birthday tune. Other heads of states joined in. The surprise seemed to get the better of President Zuma who literally staggered in his chair, showing excitement like an innocent child, arms aloft, his body sinking into the chair, as he cackled with both laughter and gratefulness at the sweet surprise.
