Khama meets Kgatleng councilors

MOCHUDI: President Ian Khama has urged civic leaders here to exercise diligence in discharging their responsibilities.

Addressing a full meeting of the Kgatleng District Council yesterday, Khama said interaction between local and central government was important because it could help both entities gain a clear understanding of the opportunities and challenges of local service delivery. The President said consultation was necessary for a better partnership of the two. There was a need to work together to achieve goals through collective leadership.President Khama, who was accompanied by several ministers, said the aim of his visit to KDC was to find a common ground between local and central government and to seek shared solutions to development and service delivery challenges.

It was through constant consultation between local and central government that programmes, projects and initiatives remained focused and always reflected people's aspirations.Khama appealed to Kgatleng councillors to tell people candidly about the state of the economy and the government's ability to avail funds to meet both recurrent and development budget obligations. Political leaders have a duty to inform Batswana of the need to exercise spending restraint and limitations, as well as the number of existing government projects and programmes, he noted. "We all have a responsibility to ensure optimal use of public resources at our disposal and resource allocation in your council should reflect agreed priorities," he said. President Khama encouraged KDC to engage the private sector for the benefit of small, micro and medium enterprises in Kgatleng.
