Khama locks out Barata-Phathi

President Ian Khama's new cabinet was announced yesterday, sidelining prominent members of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) who were engaged in a tussle with him in the lead-up to the elections. Daniel Kwelagobe,GUS Matlhabaphiri, Botsalo Ntuane and Wynter Mmolotsi have been left out in a sign of things to come for both Parliament and inner-party politics.

Instead of roping in Barata-Phathi kingpins Khama snubbed them and instead brought in junior members of the camp such as Mokgweesti Masisi, Reverend Dr John Seakgosing who are new entrants in parliament. He has however retained Barata-Phathi members who have been in the last cabinet such as Ponatshego Kedikilwe,Keletso Rakhudu, Nonofo Molifi and of course the President's friend Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi.

This will sting the faction who only on Tuesday in an act of cowardice and self aggrandizement chickened out of rejecting Khama's nomination of specially elected MPs with the hope that Khama will return the favour and give them substantial appointments into cabinet. Khama has since rebuffed and thus leaving a bad taste in the Barata-Phathi factionalists mouths.
