Khama frees Kalafatis killers

The killers of John Kalafatis waltzed out of prison on Friday morning last week after President Ian Khama issued a presidential pardon for the three state security agents, Gotshosamang Sechele, Ronny Matako and Boitshoko Maifala.

They were set free after serving only a few months of their 11 years jail time sentence. The three were jointly charged alongside their fellow Botswana Defence Force (BDF) member, Dzikamani Mothobi, who has long been acquitted of the murder of John Kalafatis, who was a crime suspect when he met his death gangland style in May 2009.

Meanwhile, Kalafatis' family lawyer Dick Bayford says the sudden pardoning of the three killers proves that the order to kill Kalafatis had come from the presidency. Speaking to Mmegi yesterday, Bayford said the pardoning of the three was not surprising "because all along it was clear that the brutal and senseless killing of John Kalafatis was engineered and sponsored from the highest echelons of power in this country".
