Despite his abhorrence of alcohol, President Ian Khama has no compunctions about borrowing from the industry.

In order to empower Batswana youth, Khama has directed the Ministry of Trade and Industry to woo the private sector to duplicate the entrepreneurship development concept initiated by the Kgalagadi Breweries Limited (KBL) and its subsidiary, the Botswana Breweries Limited (BBL). A deputy permanent secretary in the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Boniface Mphehle said last year, the president expressed his admiration for Kickstart, the entrepreneurship development initiative from KBL. A workshop was then held at Phakalane late where 76 company CEO's were addressed last year by the Minister of Trade Neo Moroka, about the president's call.

"KBL was invited to make a presentation and share their experiences with other businesses in light of the fact that KBL and BBL, through their Kgalagadi Beverages Trust pioneered this concept in 2004. Businesses are therefore free to initiate projects that can promote small local enterprises in Botswana," Mphehle said. He stated that they have appealed to the business community to emulate the Kickstart initiative.
