Kgatleng council adopts reduced budget

The Kgatleng District Council has passed its proposed recurrent budget for 2009-2010. In a special full council meeting yesterday, the councillors were informed that the budget was down 18.69 percent from the one initially proposed.

When presenting the budget, the chairman of the Finance and Strategic Planning Committee, councillor Gilbert Mangole, said the initial proposal for the 2009-2010 financial year had been P201,349,180 but it was reduced to P163,707 400.

He explained that 55 percent of the budget will go to council staff and members' salaries, sitting allowances and terminal allowances while 45 percent will go to the running, establishment and special expenses accounts. He said the reason more money was going to salaries and personal emoluments was in accordance with the organisation and methods for local councils in which new posts had been created. He said scarce skills allowances had also contributed to the rising salary bill.
