Kanye opposition leaders back striking workers

Opposition parties in Kanye have called on striking civil servants to intensify the industrial action as long as President Ian Khama and his government continue to ignore their calls for a salary increase.

Addressing the striking government workers at Mmasekou in Kanye on Monday, Botswana Congress Party (BCP)'s Kagiso Itumeleng said that as opposition parties they were disappointed that the President continues to go around the country "bragging" about how he would fire the striking workers.

"There is a serious issue to be discussed but all he can do is tell the country about how he will use his iron fist. As opposition parties we are fully behind you and we urge you to stay away from work until government realises that you are the pillar of the economy and your welfare comes before politicians'," Itumeleng said.
