Kanjabanga to get his e-passport

Gaborone private attorney Gabriel Kanjabanga has been invited to apply for his e-passport and will not have to renounce his Namibian citizenship as earlier demanded by the Botswana government.

A letter from Department of Immigration and Citizenship Director Mabuse Pule addressed to Kanjabanga says the department made a "serious" consideration of his case and reversed its position."After serious consideration of your case the Department of Immigration and Citizenship is requesting you to present yourself to its counters and apply for the e-passport," reads the letter.

The letter comes two weeks after Kanjabanga slapped the department with a lawsuit for its refusal to give him the e-passport before he renounced his Namibian citizenship. The department had argued that the fact that his father was Namibian who relocated to Botswana in the 1940s automatically made him Namibian and therefore a non-citizen. The department officials refused him the e-passport on grounds that he should first renounce his Namibian citizenship.
