Kalafhi Day Hospital, which is the country’s first technology-led medical or smart hospital, has commenced operations.
According to officials, by the end of the year, the medical facility will be fully controlled by technology that will play a central role in patient care. The hospital will offer preemptive care to minimally invasive procedures, making high-quality care both accessible and affordable, a statement said. In the first phase of its opening, which was in October 2, the smart hospital provided general practice services, oncology, cardiology, radiology, and endocrinology, among others. The second phase will expand into dental care, gastroenterology, ophthalmology and even clinical psychology. “Imagine a healthcare system where we focus on prevention, not just treatment. Where we can predict and prevent illnesses before they become life-threatening. “That’s the future we’re building with Kalafhi,” said Dr Matlhogonolo Mongwa-Mouwane, owner of Kalafhi.
She added: “Our goal is to reduce the need for tertiary healthcare services by focusing on early detection and prevention, We’re not just treating patients—we’re empowering them to take control of their health.” According to Dr Mongwa-Mouwane, building Kalafhi Day Hospital was no easy feat. “There were many challenges,” she said, reflecting on the obstacles that nearly derailed the project. Securing funding was a significant hurdle. “Convincing investors to support a project like this in Botswana wasn’t easy. Many didn’t see the potential in healthcare innovation, especially in a market like ours.” Another challenge was navigating the healthcare regulatory landscape. Getting approvals from authorities and ensuring the hospital met stringent standards took time. Even now, as the hospital prepares to be fully operational, some specialists are still awaiting work permits. “We’re opening in phases because not all our departments are fully operational yet,” she explains before adding, “But that’s okay. We’ll get there".
