Kalafatis killers to be sentenced on Wednesday

Defence attorney in the John Kalafatis murder case has pleaded with the High Court to temper mercy with justice in sentencing the four convicted soldiers. Justice David Newman is expected to deliver sentence this Wednesday.

On Friday, Thabiso Tafila, on behalf of Dzikamani Mothobi, Gotshosamang Sechele, Ronnie Matako and Boitshoko Maifala told the court that the case has a likelihood of distracting other security agents from doing their jobs diligently.

Tafila said the court should take into consideration the fact that despite being found guilty of murder, the four officers had for a long time risked their lives to protect society from dangerous criminals. The offence was committed while on duty and if a harsher sentence is imposed on the convicts, it has the potential to negatively affect other security agents who might face a similar situation, Tafila said.
