Justice Key Dingake of the High Court commended the local media for a job well-done despite occasional lapses.

He said the media has performed excellently in its news packaging and dissemination duty. Though there are occasional lapses in the profession, which has required the court to correct, he said this is outweighed by the good job. He said there is need to invest in the media as an important institution that supports democracy. "The media is the nerve centre of democracy," he said at this year's Media Institute of Southern Africa - Botswana chapter awards ceremony on Friday.

He urged media professionals to adhere to the code of ethics, as this will ensure provision of quality in information dissemination. Like the judicial profession, he said, the media plays a watchdog role in society. This means that the media must be fully independent. "The independence of the media is important as it ensures impartial dissemination of information," he said.
