Judge extends mercy to Arsonist

FRANCISTOWN: Justice Mpaphi Phumaphi yesterday asked Moroka Lebakeng, believed to have been the arsonist in the razing of the Mahalapye Magistrates Court five years ago, whether President Ian Khama would accept what he did after gaining remission.

This was after Lebakeng told the court that he had one year to go to complete his sentence for arson after the President granted him remission. "Did the President accept what you have done?" asked Justice Phumaphi. Lebakeng declined to answer the question.

Then the judge told him he had committed one of the most heinous crimes by attacking the judiciary. The judge explained that he did so by burning the Magistrates Court to defeat the ends of justice.
