Jobseekers fill Phikwe stadium to register for work

SELEBI-PHIKWE: It is clear that unemployment in the copper mining town is prevalent as evidenced by the hundreds of people who converged on the Selebi-Phikwe Stadium yesterday morning to register with the Department of Labour.

One of the job seekers, Andrek Molochwa told Mmegi that he arrived at the stadium at 5am but found more than 50 people ahead of him. Molochwa explained that he lost his job in December after the company he wasworking for closed shop. He then decided to register his name with the Labour office in an attempt to find a job.

Another job seeker, John Motlapele wondered why unemployment was so high when the country has such a small population and the economy is doing well. He said he is an artisan and he has been looking for a job since last year but his situation is so bleak that even registering his name with the Labour office does not stir hope within him.  For his part, Selebi-Phikwe regional labour officer, Mothusi Komane explained that the role of his office is to assist Batswana to land jobs, and not create jobs. He said they encourage companies to utilise their office when looking to hire.
