A mother was on Friday stabbed to death by the father of her nine-month-old son, police suspect, in his full view.

Takatokwane police station commander, superintendent Ocean Maraganyane confirmed to The Monitor that they are investigating the case. He said the incident occurred at a cattle post in the outskirts of Takatokwane village.

“We received the report around midnight, rushed to the scene and found a 19-year-old mother in a pool of blood,” said Maraganyane.

“She was rushed to Scottish Livingstone Hospital where she was confirmed dead by doctors on arrival. The deceased was stabbed with a sharp object and had sustained multiple stab wounds all over her body.” Maraganyane said the deceased’s 22-year-old boyfriend and father of her son was arrested and charged with murder.

“The suspect is currently in custody helping the police with investigations while their son is recuperating at Scottish Livingstone Hospital.  We suspect when stabbing the mother the suspect also stabbed their son because he sustained minor stab injuries on his thigh,” said Maraganyane.

He said their investigations have revealed that the couple had a fight that lead to the fatal stabbing of the late teens mother.  Maraganyane said earlier that night the couple was seen imbibing at a shebeen where a misunderstanding allegedly arose.

Asked what the couple’s misunderstanding was all about, Maraganyane said their preliminary investigations revealed that the boyfriend suspected his girlfriend was cheating on him.

He said the suspect is likely to be arraigned today before Molepolole Magistrate’s Court.

Maraganyane went on to raise concern over the escalating cases of murder and bodily harm in his policing area. He said this is the second murder case this year, but they have been recording a number of bodily harm cases involving lovers’ brawls usually after drinking sprees.

He said in responding to the escalating fights, especially between lovers, they have been conducting workshops with farmers in cattle posts and rural lands raising awareness.

“We have been pleading with farmers to talk to their workers because the fights mostly involve herdmen and their partners. We have urged them to plead with their workers to respect the sanctity of life and avoid settling disputes through employing violent means,” he said.
