JCE results a huge shocker

In a telling revelation of the state of education in Botswana, close to 5000 candidates who sat for the Junior Certificate Examinations (JCE) last year have obtained Grade U. A total of 4996 candidates obtained the lowest possible grade and in contrast, only five obtained Merit, the highest possible grade. This is a large decrease from the 67 who obtained Merit in 2011.

Further, according to a media release on the results, released by the Botswana Examinations Council (BEC) yesterday afternoon, only 590 candidates obtained grade A.  A total of 4722 received Grade B, 10 320 obtained Grade C, while the majority (13 031) received Grade D. Candidates who received Grade E total 4724.

A total of 38 385 candidates sat for the exams last year, a slight decrease from the 39 374 who sat for the examinations in 2011. Of these, 19 312 were male and 19 073 were female candidates.
