JC 2024 results show slight improvement

Botswana Examination Council (BEC) has recorded a slight improvement in the performance of the 2024 Junior Certificate Examination (JCE) results with the pass rate going from 77.79% in 2023 to 81.66% this year from both government and private schools.

In a statement released by the examination body announcing the results this evening, both the government and private performed better than the 2023 candidates did. From government, candidates in grade C or better recorded an increase of 1.47 percent in their performance from the 2024 exams. “Overall performance of government schools only; results for the 2024 JCE cohort indicate that the proportion of candidates obtaining credit grades C or better is at 38.57% compared to 37.10% in 2023,” BEC reported. The 2024 government cohort also recorded an increase in grade E or better which went on from 83.10% to 85.54% recording an increase of 2.44 percent. “It is, therefore, concluded that the performance of 2024 government candidates has improved significantly compared to that of 2023,” BEC stated.

Meanwhile, performance recorded an increase in grade C or better from both the private and the government. “Performance for all 2024 JCE candidates (government and private) indicates that the proportion of candidates obtaining grade C or better is at 36.28% compared to 34.24% in 2023,” BEC reported. Whereas the proportion of candidates obtaining grade E or better is 81.66% compared to 77.79% in 2023. The 2024 candidates have also recorded an increase in outstanding performances of 16 students who attained merit compared to eight in 2023. Grade A has increased from 440 to 613, whilst grade B rose from 4,326 to 4,790, and grade C improved from 10,541 to 10,899.
