MAUN: The preponderance of second-hand Asian cars, which are commonly known as fongkongs, on the roads may soon come to an end as the Ministry of the Environment, Wildlife and Tourism moves to reduce environmental pollution.

Infact, there is law in the offing to regulate the importation of fongkongs through rigorous gas emission tests before the cars may be driven on Botswana roads. The move is aimed at cutting down on gas emissions in a bid to join the international community in reducing global warming.

Minister Kitso Mokaila pressed the red button for fongkongs recently when he told the Botswana chapter of the 10th International Waste Management Congress in Maun that the escalation of the Asian cars over the last decade in Botswana posed a threat to the environment.
