Japan on the road to recovery

The Japanese areas that were affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Tsunami and the nuclear power plant accident early this year are on a steady path towards recovery and reconstruction, said the Japan ambassador to Botswana, Hiroyasu Koboyashi.

Speaking at the celebration of the Japanese Emperor's 78th birthday in Gaborone on Friday, he pointed out that while most of the people evacuated from their homes are back to their daily lives, around 65,000 are still taking shelter in temporary housing or staying with relatives.

In relation to the accident at Fukushima Nuclear Power Station, radiation is now at normal levels (except at the evacuation zone surrounding the power plant), posing no health hazards, he said. Although it was an unfortunate incident, it has also renewed Japanese people's awareness that the international community is deeply concerned and support Japan, he added.
