Jamali, Rantshabeng acquitted

LOBATSE: Independence day is a time to be happy that we are free. It is especially sweet when a burden, such as one that precedes a possible conviction, is taken off your shoulders.

The statement could not be truer for well-known local businessman, Seyed Jamali and deputy permanent secretary, Victor Rantshabeng. The two were on the eve of Botswana Day acquitted of corruption charges.

"I am happy that I am free, I know some of you are unhappy that I am free," a happy Rantshabeng said last Thursday, shortly after the High Court in Lobatse threw out the charges against him. In freeing the two men, Justice Leburu found that the seven-year delay between investigation and subsequent trial, was unreasonable and would prejudice the accused. He was not satisfied with the explanation given by the state.
