Striking workers angry at government's refusal to accommodate their demands forced the closure of nearly all shops and offices at Gaborone's Main Mall yesterday.

The workers burst into the city centre in the afternoon carrying sticks and stones and brought business to a standstill. They smashed car and shop windows, sending customers and shop owners scurrying for safety. As quickly as they had come the strikers left the scene - a mall full of broken glass and stones. Jet Stores, Pep, Cashcorps and BBS Bank are among businesses affected. Vendors who sell airtime and newspapers were not spared.

The police and Special Support Group arrived with sirens wailing a few minutes later, to find only curious onlookers.
