Is President Khama a democrat?

FRANCISTOWN: In his inaugural speech just over three years ago, President Ian Khama assured everyone that he was a democrat.

Further, he adopted 'Democracy' as one of the principles that would define his administration. Botswana's foreign policy has, since Khama's accession to power, been driven by the President's declared commitment to democracy and the rule of law. Not surprisingly, therefore, Khama has taken to hectoring those political leaders he adjudges to be undemocratic, especially in Africa where they are in abundance. For instance, Botswana has openly criticised the ZANU-PF government of Robert Mugabe for its alleged lack of commitment to the Global Political Agreement when Morgan Tsvangirai accused Mugabe of not being a genuine partner in the power sharing deal.

The Botswana government, contrary to the general consensus among African countries, has supported the indictment of the Sudanese president, Omar Al-Bashir for alleged war crimes. When the Ivory Coast election results were contested between Laurent Gbagbo and Alassane Ouattara, Botswana supported the latter accusing the former of having rigged the elections. True to its new-found character, Botswana supported the UN imposed no-fly zone over Libya too.
