Is MDC losing support in Africa?

ADDIS ABABA: Zimbabwean Prime Minister-designate, Morgan Tsvangirai may be losing support among African leaders after the latest collapse in the talks between his Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) MDC and the ruling ZANU-PF of President Robert Mugabe. Sources at the African Union (AU) headquarters say that the opposition leader is losing support after reneging on an agreement reached during a regional summit in South Africa on Monday.

The MDC has announced that it has not agreed to an agreement announced by the regional body SADC following mediation talks held in Pretoria South Africa on Monday.

A diplomat in Addis Ababa has said that the MDC had reneged after agreeing to a number of points in the agreement. "The fact that there was agreement behind closed doors in a discussion which Tsvangirai was a part of and then just moments later, his party came out to reject the agreement may have a detrimental effect on his support among African countries," explained the diplomat.
