Independent rights institute in the offing

On his return from the 15th Session of the Universal Periodic Review's (UPR) working group of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Ramadeluka Seretse, underscored Botswana's need for assistance and support to enable the government to remain fully engaged on human rights obligations.

According to a press statement from Seretse's office, prior to his departure for the UN meeting, some rights organisations had complained bitterly about human rights abuse in Botswana. The charge sheet, which was put together by UNHRC following complaints by Ditshwanelo, lists a litany of human rights violations, among them disenfranchisement of prisoners, denial of ARV treatment to non citizens, criminalisation of homosexuality, abuse of Basarwa living in the Central Kgalagadi Game Reserve (CKGR) and failure to establish an independent human rights institute to address complaints from members of the public whose rights may have been violated.
