IEC Turns To Parties To Beat Apathy

SELEBI-PHIKWE: The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has turned to political parties to beat voter apathy.

This emerged during a meeting addressed by the opposition, Botswana Congress Party (BCP) at the Selebi-Phikwe bus rank on Thursday afternoon, where even free lunch was served. BCP regional chairperson, Nzwaligwa Nzwaligwa said the IEC had requested political parties to urge members of the public to register for next year's general election. With two weeks to go to the voter registration deadline, just over 3,000 people have registered to vote in Selebi-Phikwe.

In 2004, 8,000 people registered to vote and it seems unlikely that this number will be surpassed or even reached again.
