IEC officer probed for 'nocturnal' registration

Police in Dibete are investigating a case in which an employee of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in Mmaphashalala allegedly registered voters in an inappropriate manner.

A source, who requested anonymity, says the incumbent Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) councillor for Mmaphashalala/Dovedale in Mahalapye East approached the officer after working hours about registering six people whose ID numbers he had.

Councillor Neo Magowe was in the company of a friend when the two "pressurised" the young woman to register the names. "Apparently the councillor secured the ID numbers for the voters by telephone and managed to secure voting cards for them," the source says.
