IEC establishes foreign voting stations

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says it has established 25 external polling stations in seven African countries for the 2009 general elections. South Africa has the highest concentration with eight stations.

The country has about 3,096 Batswana students besides compatriots living or working there. The IEC told Mmegi that other polling stations are in Ethiopia, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Australia, Belgium, China, India, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and USA. "It has to be noted that these polling stations are established in countries where Botswana has established embassies and consulates. All the embassies of the mentioned countries are polling stations, save for South Africa where a number of the additional polling stations are outside the locations of Botswana's embassy in Pretoria and the two consulate general offices in Johannesburg and Cape Town," the IEC said.

It added that the external registration exercise is conducted within the specified period appointed for voter registration in Botswana and in the same manner. The supplementary registration will be conducted from 11th-31st August 2008. The last registration was conducted in October last year.
