FRANCISTOWN: After successfully retaining Monarch South ward as an independent candidate, ex-mayor Ignatius Moswaane has indicated that he is not desperate to join any political party.

"I took the decision to stand as an independent candidate in the best interests of the electorate in Monarch," he said. Moswaane won the Monarch South ward convincingly garnering 617 votes to relegate the man who beat him in the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) Baboni Mosalagae to a distant second with 390 votes. Contestants for the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) got 111 votes, Botswana National Front (BNF) 31 votes and Botswana Peoples Party (BPP) 20 votes.

After losing the noisy BDP primaries, Moswaane decided to go independent when he saw that the party leadership was not handling his appeal fairly. He strongly believes that he is better placed to represent Monarch South. "My support has always cut across the age groups and social groups in the ward," he said. He plans to consult with the people on what he should do next.
