Husband and wife sentenced for fraud

Vincent Mooketsi, 30 and his wife Doreen Mooketsi, 27, directors of Vindoors agencies, appeared for sentencing before Chief Magistrate Kenneth Obeng of Francistown Magistrate Court on January 23, 2007.

The two were charged with forgery and attempting to obtain money by false pretences.

The facts of the case are that Vincent Mooketsi, who is the managing director, and his wife Doreen, a director of the same company, in October 2003 acted jointly and in concert, with the intention to defraud, attempted to obtain the sum of P50 000.00 (fifty thousand pula) from the First National Bank - Francistown branch. They pretended that the P50 000.00 was legitimate proceeds of cheque No 572485 drawn on the Botswana government as payment for a job they had done for government which cheque and representation they knew to be false in fact and in truth.

They were both found guilty and sentenced as follows: The company was fined P1000.00. Vincent Mooketsi was sentenced to 3 years for forgery and 4 years for attempting to obtain money falsely. The sentences are to run concurrently. His wife Doreen was sentenced to 18 months in jail suspended for two years on conditions that she does not commit a similar offence. Rebecca Peggy Leeme, of the Directorate of Public Prosecution represented the state.
